Pura Vida Travels - A Guide To Travel In Latin America

One day we were out tooling around and my wife made me go look at houses. The development we went to is called Casa Real and is located near the airport behind Pharoh's Casino. It's a nice little neighborhood but it's a little far from things like the mall, grocery stores, etc. It seems to be the "in" place to live right now in Managua for some reason that I can't quite figure out.

My second weekend in Nicaragua started with a trip to Esteli. Esteli is famous for one thing and that is making some of the best cigars in the world. My goal for this trip was to see if I could get to see a real large scale cigar factory and possibly get some cigars as well. I've been in small scale operations in Costa Rica, Granada, and even in the USA but I wanted to see if it was possible to see some of the legendary factories in Esteli.

The drive to Esteli from Managua takes a little over 2 hours and is very scenic. From Managua you head towards the town of Sebaco. Once you get to Sebaco you come to a Y in the road. The road to the right goes to Matagalpa and the road to the left goes to Esteli.

Sebaco is the rice capital of Nicaragua. There are fields of rice for as far as the eye can see and dozens of processing plants along the highway. It's the most rice I've ever seen anywhere in one place in my entire life.
