Pura Vida Travels - A Guide To Travel In Latin America

Since we were in no real hurry we decided to stop and take a look around the town of Juigalpa. My wife went to secondary school there so we took a ride over to see her school. The Instituto Nacional De Chontales Josefa Toledo Aguerri is the equivalent to a high school in the United States. Acoyapa, where my wife grew up, doesn't have a secondary school so she had to go to Juigalpa every day.

You will be shocked to learn that in the middle of Juigalpa is a giant church. The church in Juigalpa seems fairly new and modern in comparision to other towns in Nicaragua. Across the street from the church is a small park and the night that we were there some sort of AIDS awareness festival was going on. One of the good things that the Sandinista's do is educate people about health issues as a result Nicaragua has a very low AIDS rate.

While we were walking around the town I spotted the cowboy store in the photos below. I ended up buying a cowboy hat to protect my bald head from Nicaragua's scorching sun. My wife wanted me to buy a pair of boots as well and while the prices seemed pretty good I'm not really a cowboy boots wearin' kind of guy. Of course, I wasn't really a cowboy hat wearing type of guy either before that impulse purchase but it turns out that I ended up liking my new hat for a couple of reasons. First, it does a great job keeping the sun of your head. Second, it's very comfortable. Last, but certainly not least, it turns out that chicas in Nicaragua really dig a guy in a cowboy hat. My wife, however, did not appreciate this unintended consequence. It will be interesting to see if I still have a cowboy hat when I return to Managua in a few weeks or if it has mysteriously disappeared. :)
