Pura Vida Travels - A Guide To Travel In Latin America

On Sunday we decided to head north towards Honduras to see what Nicaragua's northern region had to offer. Northern Nicaragua is very mountainous and logically much cooler than Southern Nicaragua. Oddly, it's a bit more like what I'm used to back home in Pittsburgh since most of the forests are pine. We really didn't think out this day very well and it would become painfully obvious the further along we went.

After passing through Esteli the first town we hit that wasn't familiar terroritory was Condega. There was a huge fiesta going on with horses, cowboys, carnival rides, etc. My wife wanted to stop but I figured we could do it on the way back. She warned me that it would probably be over in a few hours but I didn't listen. Sure enough, by the time we returned all that was left of the fiesta was a few hardcore drunks staggering about. In retrospect it would have been the most interesting thing we would have done and I drove right by it looking for something better.

What I really wanted to see on this trip was Somoto Canyon but we never did get to see it. Somoto Canyon is kind of like the Grand Canyon of Nicaragua. I've seen pictures of it and it's amazing but unfortunately there's no way to get to it without a 4 wheel drive and we didn't have one. Actually, I drove right past the entrance and we ended up driving all the way to the Honduran border and turning around. (I didn't have my passport so we couldn't even cross the border) When we got to the "road" that leads to the canyon there were a couple of guys sitting there and they just laughed when we said we wanted to see the canyon. They basically said you'll never get there in that Toyota Corolla and they also said that it's way too far to walk. Oh well, we'll do it again another day.

When we got back to Somoto I figured since we had driven this far we might as well check out the town. (Somoto is 3 1/2 hours from Managua) It turns out that Somoto is famous for it's "rosquillas". Rosquillas are sort of a variation on sugar cookies. It's hard to describe them exactly. My family has mixed opinions. Me and my Aunt really like them, my cousins hate them. The point being is that people either love them or hate them, nobody is indifferent when it comes to rosquillas.

We didn't have any problems finding stores selling rosquillas, however, since it was Sunday we did have a problem finding a store that was open. Juniett went door to door knocking until she found someone willing to take her money. The store we found also sold motor oil and auto parts in addition to cookies. I'm pretty sure that would be a health code violation if Somoto had a health code.
