Pura Vida Travels - A Guide To Travel In Latin America

Up until this point I have failed to mention that Colombia has had a civil war going on for the past 50 years and it is still ongoing. While the northern part of the country (which Medellin is in) is under control and relatively safe for the most part now, the guerillas still bomb things from time to time. Colombia also used to lead the world in kidnappings but they are fairly rare in Medellin now unless you are worth a lot of money. (Fortunately for me, Iím not worth that much) Still, with that in mind, itís best to keep a low profile here. If you cross the wrong person in Medellin you WILL end up dead. Sadly, thatís a fact of life here. The paramilitaries, although underground now, still have a heavy influence. I could try and explain how this all works but itís very confusing with all the different factions involved. (Guerillas, FARC, military, police, mafia, drug cartels, etc.) The best way to describe it is that pretty much if you mind your own business in Medellin no one will bother you but if you donít, look out. There is a delicate balance that has been struck at this point in time and things seem to be changing for the better. Every person I have talked to is very weary of the violence and they just want it to end.

OK, enough of the political situation in Colombia. I talked to my friend Maria and she wanted to go out again so we set up a date for 7 oíclock. She dropped a surprise on me in that she said she had a friend that wanted to meet me as well and asked if she minded if she went out with us. That seemed like a bit of an odd request but what was I going to say? No? After a bit of coaxing on my part it turns out her friend is another girl that I had written to online but thatís all she would tell me. It seems her and Maria had been comparing notes on what I wrote to each of them. I guess I must have passed whatever test they had if they both want to go out with me. I canít wait to find out who the mystery girl is. This is going to be an interesting night for sureÖ

During the day I didn't do much other than wander around town a bit. I took a few pictures of the downstairs area of the apartment I rented. The apartment was in a mansion that used to belong to a former mayor of Medellin. I guess he wasn't very popular because he ended up moving out after someone planted a bomb in the house and tried to kill him. Fortunately for me the damage has been repaired and I got to enjoy the fruits of his ill-gotten gains.

The mystery girls name is Janet. Like Maria she is very pretty. The 3 of us went to Publito Paisa together. This is a replica of a typical paisa town high in the hills overlooking Medellin. Itís a really romantic spot for a date if youíre ever in Medellin and looking for a place to take a girl to or in my case girls to. After Publito Paisa the 3 of us went out to dinner at a nice restaurant. Iím not sure where it is or what the name was because I forgot to get a card at the restaurant. The food was excellent and was much more than one human being could possibly consume in one sitting. Dinner for 3 including drinks, appetizers, entrees, dessert, coffee, and a $5 tip (for which Maria scolded me because she said it was way too much) came to the princely sum of $30.
