Pura Vida Travels - A Guide To Travel In Latin America

It was a beautiful clear day for flying as I set off for the short trip to Managua. On the way we flew over the Florida Keys and then Cuba and there were some beautiful views on the way.

Just before arriving in Managua we flew over a giant volcanic crater filled with water. I never realized it but Nicaragua has a LOT of volcanoes. There is a line of 26 of them (I think) that runs through the center of the country. Some of them are active and some aren't but it explains the massive earthquakes that Nicaragua is prone to.

I took a nice video flying into Managua. The landing was one of the worst ever. We smacked the ground so hard half the luggage bins on the plane popped open.

My plan for this trip was to spend the first weekend with my girlfriend at the Barcelo Montelimar Beach resort for 3 days of fun and sun at the ocean. Unfortunately, her boss had other plans for her and made her work all weekend. I found this out 2 days before my trip so I really wasn't sure what I was going to do when I got to Managua. I had reservations for the beach resort but I didn't really feel like going to the beach alone so when I arrived in Managua I set out to find a hotel. My favorite, the Hotel El Almendro, was booked so I decided to see what else Managua had to offer.

I ended up at the Hotel Bello Horizonte which is located, appropriately enough, near the rotunda Bello Horizonte. The area looks a little frightening but it's actually quite nice. I walked around quite a bit in the area and other than receiving some curious looks from the locals I felt right at home here. The hotel costs $35/night. The rooms have air conditioning, cable TV, a refrigerator, and hot water so it's not a bad deal. They also have free internet access in the lobby. The downside is the walls are paper thin so you can hear everything going on in every other room. With that being said the hotel is still pretty quiet at night so it wasn't too bad. The bathrooms have the infamous "suicide" shower heads that feature live electricty going to the shower head. You need to watch where you touch these things because they can give you a nice jolt if you aren't careful.

I took a short video of the walk from the rotunda to the hotel...
